Besonders anspruchsvoll ist die Anwendung des Warmluftverfahrens oder der Heissluftmethode in Großküchen, Lebensmittelverarbeitenden Betrieben, Großmühlen oder Biobetrieben. Hier müssen alle Verstecke der Schädlinge von der Hitze erreicht werden, es dürfen aber auch keine Maschinen, Steuerungen oder Materialien zerstört werden.

Flour mills and food processing plants are periodically infested by insect pests like the Red Flour beetle, Mealworm beetle, Drugstore beetle, Bisquit beetle etc. Non-Chemical methods are desired methods for eradication of pests in those facilities. Heat or warm air treatments will not lead to any long-term health side effects of exposed individuals. Thermal treatments are performed only a single time, for low to mid-level infestations, to effectively kill all insect life stages from eggs to adults. Chemicals typically require multiple treatments over an extended time period to control an infestation. Heated air is able to penetrate areas (pest harborages) that are difficult to reach with pesticides or other chemicals/powders. This issue is important as insects are known to quickly hide in small cracks and crevices which could result in re-infestation (rebound). Untreated areas of a mill, facility or structure may remain operational during this non-toxic heat treatment. This means the entire site does not need to be evacuated in order for the treatment to occur.


The proper, even application of heat inside a structure will not result in any damage of interior space contents due to electronically equiped hardware and heat sensors. It is safe to leave potentially infested electronics and other contents in the infested space being heated as long as they are unplugged. Very heat sensitive items have to be removed prior to a heat treatment. Wireless sensors and computers are used to remotely track high temperatures in various areas throughout the structure or air space being treated. Bioassays with live pest stages are monitoring the efectiveness of the treatment.
